This week we had the opportunity to do something a bit different and give back to a family in our own community. My Happy Place is an organization in Mason City that helps children that are sick to have a bedroom they can be happy in. However, while starting the process for a bedroom makeover for Clear Lake’s Beckett Peterson, who has mitochondrial disease and can’t walk on his own, it was obvious his family needed a bathroom makeover that is wheel-chair accessible instead. His mother Amanda has to physically pick him and carry him into the tub in their bathroom every time for a bath, and he was starting to get too big for her.
Used to only painting and adding new furnishes to bedrooms and having no idea how to take on the needs a bathroom makeover would require, My Happy Place asked if DSC would like to be the contractor on the project. Along with our assistance, Manly Services, Lahner Electric, and Larsen Plumbing & Heating donated their time and services with monetary donations from Flooring America and Cent Credit Union. Best Western donated a room to the family during the construction.
The makeover project included taking space from two closets in bedrooms on either side of the bathroom to expand the bathroom enough to be wheel-chair accessible. The bathroom has new tile, furnishes, and includes a shower where they can roll in a shower chair for Beckett. The project from start to finish will be completed within two weeks.
