DSC Awarded 2-Year Wastewater Project

Dean Snyder Construction selected by the City of Des Moines for two new projects at the Des Moines Wastewater Reclamation Facility (WRF)

Grit Removal Improvements Project

Awarded the first project in Spring 2018, DSC crews are making improvements to the existing grit removal system at the Des Moines Wastewater Reclamation Facility (WRF).

Abrasive wear from grit and corrosion caused by hydrogen sulfide in the wastewater make grit removal hard on equipment and after many years of operating a 97-million gallon-per-day wastewater treatment facility, the existing grit removal system was near the end of its life and required replacement.

The project includes demolishing the existing aerated grit chambers and replacing it with a stacked tray grit removal system, infrastructure modifications to the existing grit removal system with phased demolition of the existing aerated grit removal tanks, the removal and replacement of existing grit washing and handling equipment, pipe work, blower installation, and construction of new grit tanks.

When the grit removal project is completed in Summer 2020, the WRF will have increased the removal efficiency and decreased operating costs associated with cleaning aeration basins, digesters, and other areas to remove the accumulated grit.

Blended Sludge Pump Replacement Project

The second project, a blended sludge pump replacement, was awarded in November 2018 and includes removal and replacement of five blended sludge pumps, piping, valves, controls, variable speed drives and other related electrical equipment.

Currently past its expected life usage and in poor condition, the suction piping inside the blend sludge wet wells will be replaced due to the blended sludge also being abrasive.

DSC crews will start this project in Spring 2019 and have it completed by later this summer/early fall.

The Des Moines Wastewater Reclamation Authority is composed of 17 communities, counties, and townships and is the largest wastewater treatment facility in Iowa.
