In February, Governor Kim Reynolds signed a proclamation making March 4-10 “Women in Construction Week.”
Today, 9.1 percent of women in the United States are employed in various occupation sectors of the construction industry according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and in Iowa alone, we are short thousands of construction workers.
“Women in Construction Week” provides a forum to raise awareness that, despite stereotypes, there are numerous opportunities for women in the construction industry and emphasizes the growing need to fill these roles.
DSC Business Development Associate Tania Bowman is a member of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and worked with the local NAWIC Des Moines chapter and Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds to have Women in Construction Week proclaimed in the state of Iowa. Tania also promoted the week through jobsite visits, networking events, and even TV interviews.
“We are working to get the word out to women that, yes, the construction industry has so many opportunities for women. You can be an architect, an engineer, project manager, work in the office…the opportunities are endless,” she says.
