Exciting Changes Coming to Surf District

Two new projects are officially underway in the Clear Lake Surf District. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Wednesday, April 17 at the Surf Ballroom (this date was specifically chosen for the anniversary of its opening in 1933) for the projects happening simultaneously.

The City of Clear Lake in partnership with the North Iowa Cultural Center & Museum and Surf Ballroom is building a new Surf Ballroom Music Enrichment & Immersive Center (MEIC). The 10,867 SF, 2-story facility will be located directly west of the existing Surf Ballroom and will be the hub for a comprehensive multi-building historical tour outlining the history of the Surf Ballroom and the district. The MEIC will include an experience theatre, exploratory & museum, gift shop, music lessons & studio wing, shared conference & meeting space, and rooftop patio & deck. Dean Snyder Construction was selected as the Construction Manager.

DSC was also selected on the 2nd project – the Streetscape Improvement Project. This project includes the construction of an over-the-road gateway feature, masonry pier features, roadway lighting and electrical, storm sewer upgrades, roadway paving, pedestrian unit paving plazas, and associated site improvements along Buddy Holly Place, North Shore Drive and 7th Avenue North surrounding the Surf Ballroom. DSC had the lowest of three bids at $4.28 million.
